Teaching Aids for Music – Laurie Oakley

Making Rhythm Notation Fun Through Tactile Exploration and Games

Students enjoy and retain learning through hands on exploration.  This idea was applied to rhythm notation and the result was Little Hands On Rhythm; a new teaching tool to help teachers convey to their students the concepts of rhythm notation through tactile exploration. We will explore how LHOR is used to teach the following: note and rest values, the time signature and the division of beats to create bars, the difference between beat and rhythm, and introduction to mixed meter, and two handed rhythms.  The demonstration will also include a board game.  The end of the game results in the creation of random rhythms that the student can clap out and apply to an improvised melody on the keyboard.
