Summer Listening

Listening to music is an essential part of becoming an accomplished musician. That’s why Doreen Hall of Paloma Piano has created the Summer Listening Calendar Challenge. There is a listening suggestion for every day of June, July, and August. Print them out and give them to your students. The musical suggestions are an eclectic mix of classical, jazz, blues, pop, ethnomusic, and more. You and your students will expand your musical horizons as you listen to these amazing  hand picked performances, available here

Note Reading Calendars

With summer coming, we all worry about our students losing momentum during the break. Here is a simple tool that really helps – 2024 Summer Note Reading Calendars. These are super easy, asking kids to read just one note a day. This keeps them connected to their music without feeling overwhelmed. It’s a great way to prevent that summer slide and keep them thinking about piano. There are 3 different sets of calendars. One calendar reinforces note reading in middle C position, another focuses on C position and the third targets G position. Even though students are only identifying one note each day, they end up thinking about the notes around it too. This means they are actually processing multiple notes, subtly reinforcing their overall note reading skills and maintaining a musical habit over the summer months. You can find these calendars here.

Have you registered for ORMTA In Sync? This year, it takes place at the University of Ottawa from July 16-18. The FREE keynote presentation from Tina Fedeski of OrKidstra will focus on something that can inspire all teachers: instilling confidence in their students through music and creating a diverse, inclusive, and kind community. The Provincial Competitions can also inspire students and teachers, with vocal and instrumental performances from Levels 8 - Associate.

Members are also welcome to attend our AGM (in-person or virtually) and OCTA Presentation. The deadline to register for most of these events is July 1st. Don't wait! Click here for more information.
