Sight Reading

One of our own members, Reginald Miller (from the North York/York Region Branch), has written a free, comprehensive document on Sight Reading. He provides many sight reading excerpts from levels 2 to 8 with explanations given for each excerpt that should develop skills which can be carried over into the study of repertoire. The student should eventually be able to recognize accompaniment patterns with their harmonic implications and many other features that occur in the pupil's repertoire, such as parallel and contrasting phrases, choral textures, etc. This should help give the pupil a firmer foundation in mastering and understanding pieces as well as giving them greater assurance in memorizing, since the pupil is seeing and hearing the bigger picture. You can find this document, as well as a wealth of other topics, in pdf form here

OrgelkidsCAN

OrgelkidsCAN is a unique educational outreach program developed by the Royal Canadian College of Organists to introduce a new generation to the joy of music and the wonders of the pipe organ! Children are empowered to discover how the organ is made and how it works by assembling a working pipe organ in under an hour. The Orgelkit is carefully designed to be appealing and educational to children, challenging and encouraging them to discover and ask questions while building it hands-on. The constructed pipe organ is playable and applies the music and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills that children are learning in school. The Peterborough Branch, in collaboration with others, have adapted this program for Canada Music Week. You can find OrgelkidsCAN here.
