Sight Reading
One of our own members, Reginald Miller (from the North York/York Region Branch), has written a free, comprehensive document on Sight Reading. He provides many sight reading excerpts from levels 2 to 8 with explanations given for each excerpt that should develop skills which can be carried over into the study of repertoire. The student should eventually be able to recognize accompaniment patterns with their harmonic implications and many other features that occur in the pupil's repertoire, such as parallel and contrasting phrases, choral textures, etc. This should help give the pupil a firmer foundation in mastering and understanding pieces as well as giving them greater assurance in memorizing, since the pupil is seeing and hearing the bigger picture. You can find this document, as well as a wealth of other topics, in pdf form here. |
