There are many types of teachers who join ORMTA:


Private music teachers who have a degree or diploma in music and teaching experience

College and university professors of music

School music teachers

Specialists in early childhood music education

Student teachers who have attained at least a grade 9 or 10 level and are continuing their education

Membership Requirements vary by Membership Type and Subjects Taught.

A member who has attained a degree/diploma (Bachelor of Music or Associate from a Conservatory) in their chosen subject(s) and teaching experience


OR


has attained a performer's diploma from a University or Conservatory along with written pedagogical requirements and also has teaching experience.

A member who has attained a degree/diploma in their chosen subject(s) but is still working towards more teaching experience. This Membership has a 2-year probationary period, which may be extended, subject to annual review by the Board of Examiners.

A member who:


  •  Has attained a Grade 9 or 10 certificate from a recognized Conservatory (or graduated from a Community College music program which would be considered equivalent to Grade 9 or 10)
  •  Has passed at least one level of Pedagogy training


Affiliate Members are members of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association. They receive the Canadian Music Teacher magazine, pay CFMTA dues, and are allowed to vote but not to hold office nationally. They are also allowed only one vote at any ORMTA meeting.

Auxiliary

Auxiliary membership is for those who are not music teachers but are supporters of music education and ORMTA's mandate.

* For each Membership Type (other than Auxiliary), you will be required to upload documents to substantiate your educational credentials and/or teaching experience.

* Applicants must have resided in Ontario for at least 6 consecutive months immediately prior to submitting an application.
