Ukrainian-born Canadian pianist, Ireneus Zuk, has appeared in numerous public, radio and television recitals, with chamber music groups, and as soloist with various orchestras. His concerts have taken him throughout Canada, the USA, Europe and the Far East. He is a graduate of the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec and McGill University in Montreal (class of Lubka Kolessa), Royal College of Music in London (class of Kendall Taylor), and the Juilliard School in New York (class of Sascha Gorodnitzki). He has received BSc, BMus, MS, LMus, ARCM (Performance-Hon), and ARCM (Pedagogy) degrees and diplomas, as well as a DMA from Peabody Conservatory, John Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) where he studied with Leon Fleisher. Winner of many prizes and scholarships, including awards from the Canada Council and Quebec Government, he also held teaching fellowships at the Juilliard School and Peabody Conservatory. Currently he combines teaching with an active concert career. He is Professor in the Dan School of Drama and Music at Queen's University (Kingston, ON), where he served as Director of the School of Music from 1997-2003. For many years he also performed in a piano duo with his sister, Luba Zuk. The duo made frequent tours, particularly in Europe, where they played concerts in major centres. They were also frequent visitors in Ukraine where they performed at eight international music festivals and in major cities, and they completed a very successful tour in China. The duo premiered many compositions by Canadian composers and commissioned a significant number of works, some under awards from the Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council. Their recordings have been included in the RCI Anthology of Canadian Music, and a CD of works for two pianos by Canadian composers was released by the SNE label. In Kyiv, Ukraine, Ireneus Zuk served as jury member of the Horowitz Competition for Young Pianists (1995, 2000, 2006) and as Chair of the State Examination Commission (Ministry of Culture) at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He has served as a juror of the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition for the performance of Contemporary Music (Canada), the Klasinc Competition (Slovenia), Les Rencontres des Jeunes (Belgium), the 1000 Islands International (USA) and the IBLA Grand Prize International Piano Competition (Italy). The government of Ukraine honoured Ireneus Zuk with a medal and the title "Merited Artist of Ukraine". The Ukrainian Canadian Congress awarded him the Shevchenko medal to recognize his promotion of Canadian and Ukrainian-Canadian music.
From the Branch:
Ireneus Zuk is known for being a kind, patient, wonderful man. Several of our local teachers who studied piano with him at Queen’s University describe him as attentive and dedicated, a professor who always took an active interest in what students were doing - even those not studying with him. His students speak very highly of his ability to connect with them through music, even decades later. His musicality and love of the repertoire has always come through clearly for both his colleagues and students. Because of his wide-ranging knowledge of arts and culture from around the world, any extended conversation with him will teach you something new. The Kingston branch is pleased to nominate Ireneus this year for this well-deserved award.
